The Federal Government has committed $1.6 billion to build heavy rail on the Sunshine Coast, connecting the existing line at Beerwah to a new station in the Maroochydore CBD along the CAMCOS corridor.
With stations expected at Caloundra, Kawana and Maroochydore, the new 37km rail line will improve connectivity to Brisbane and could be completed within a decade.
CAMCOS, which stands for Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study, has been talked about since 1999, but no significant progress has been made in the decades since, other than:
- Identifying the proposed corridor
- Buying and securing land along the proposed corridor
- Upgrading and duplicating the line between Caboolture and Beerburrum.
This project will be transformational and will:
✔️ create 9550 jobs in the construction phase;
✔️ boost regional connectivity;
✔️ alleviate population density pressures; and
✔️ prepare the Coast to host the 2032 Games.
The Sunshine Coast is Queensland’s third-biggest city with the majority of the Sunshine Coast’s 320,000 residents living between Maroochydore and Beerwah. An additional 190,000 are expected to call the region home over the next 20 years.
