20 overseas-qualified engineers in Queensland can now overcome the barriers to employment under an Engineers Australia migrant work placement program.

Engineers Australia is calling for overseas qualified engineers in Queensland looking for engineering work. The expressions of interest are now open to participate in the Queensland Global Engineering Talent Program (GET).

The GET program is an outcome of Engineers Australia’s Barriers to employment for skilled migrant engineers research, which found 47 per cent of migrant engineers actively seeking an engineering job are unemployed.

Queensland Government have co-funded up to 20 places in our Global Engineering Talent Program for future clean energy related roles.

In addressing the key findings of the research, the GET program will include a six-week preparatory course through Engineering Education Australia with engineering standards-specific training, and a 12-week paid internship at an engineering firm.

Engineers Australia Queensland General Manager Stacey Rawlings says this fully supported industry program assists engineers born and educated overseas to gain employment aligned to their qualifications and experience.

“As part of the program engineers will learn to apply their skills in an Australian context, familiarise themselves with relevant standards, codes, laws and regulations as well as practice local ways of working,” says Engineers Australia Queensland General Manager Stacey Rawlings.

“Engineers on the program will be able to further develop their network within the engineering industry in their community and have a strong pathway to full time employment,” says Engineers Australia Queensland General Manager Stacey Rawlings.

Recently Engineers Australia Queensland held an information evening for migrant engineers looking to secure their first roles in Australia.

Member Thanushka Peiris said from this event he gained knowledge and hands on experience on how to make his resume effective and how to network with other professionals and recruiters.

“I also learned how to improve my LinkedIn and other industry skills. I appreciate Engineers Australia for offering these kind of events and I hope they will hold these types of events in future for migrant engineers and other engineers too,” says Engineers Australia Member Thanushka Peiris.

Engineers Australia members are welcome to apply for the GET program no matter what engineering discipline you are specialised in. Engineers Australia currently have employers in Brisbane and regional Queensland in the following areas:

  • Clean energy
  • Civil construction project management
  • Contract administration
  • Transport
  • Traffic
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Geotechnical
  • Structural
  • IT and data
  • Surveyors
