Project Spotlight: Singelton Bypass (New England Highway)

Singleton-Bypass

acciona, Singleton Bypass,

The Singleton Bypass is a significant road infrastructure projects currently underway in the Hunter Region of New South Wales.

Designed to improve freight efficiency, reduce congestion and enhance safety along a critical transport corridor, the project represents the largest infrastructure investment in the history of the town of Singleton.

Once completed, the bypass will transform traffic flow through the region, removing heavy through-traffic from the town centre and significantly improving travel conditions along the New England Highway, one of Australia’s key freight routes connecting Sydney with northern NSW and Queensland.

Why the Singleton Bypass Was Needed

For decades, the New England Highway has carried a mix of local traffic, interstate freight and mining-related heavy vehicles directly through Singleton’s central business district. The highway effectively functions as the town’s main street, creating congestion, safety concerns and delays for both motorists and local residents.

On a typical day, around 15,000 vehicles travel through Singleton, with a significant proportion made up of heavy vehicles servicing the Hunter Valley mining sector and regional freight movements.

Traffic congestion is compounded by several sets of traffic lights along the highway through the town centre, creating delays for freight operators and commuters alike. The bypass aims to address these issues by diverting through-traffic away from the town centre and providing a faster, safer alternative route.

Project Overview

The Singleton Bypass involves the construction of a new 8-kilometre section of highway west of the existing New England Highway, allowing through-traffic to avoid the Singleton CBD entirely.

Key elements of the project include:

  • A new highway alignment starting near Newington Lane south of Singleton and reconnecting with the New England Highway north of McDougalls Hill.
  • A new interchange connecting the bypass with Putty Road, an important regional route linking the Hunter Valley with Sydney.
  • Connections to the existing New England Highway at both the northern and southern ends of the project as well as near Gowrie.
  • Several major bridge structures across the Hunter River floodplain.

Once completed, motorists travelling through the region will bypass multiple traffic lights in Singleton’s CBD, improving travel times and freight efficiency.

Project Cost and Funding

The Singleton Bypass is a $700 million project, jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments. The Australian Government is contributing $560 million, while the NSW Government is providing $140 million.

Who Is Constructing the Singleton Bypass?

The project is being delivered by Transport for NSW, with ACCIONA Construction Australia awarded the design and construction contract in November 2023 following a competitive procurement process.

During the tender stage, several major contractors were shortlisted for the project, including:

  • ACCIONA Construction Australia
  • Fulton Hogan
  • John Holland

ACCIONA ultimately secured the contract and commenced major construction works in 2024.

Construction Progress

Major construction works began in 2024 and include large-scale earthworks, bridge construction and the development of the new highway alignment.

Key works include:

  • Large earthworks along the 8-kilometre corridor
  • Construction of multiple bridges across the Hunter floodplain
  • Installation of bridge girders and bridge decks
  • Drainage, pavement works and utility relocations

Several bridge structures are currently under construction, reflecting the engineering complexity of the floodplain crossings required for the project.

Project Timeline

The concept of a bypass around Singleton has been discussed for many years due to increasing traffic volumes along the New England Highway.

Key milestones include:

2019–2020 – Community consultation and environmental assessment

2021 – Government funding allocated for the project

2022 – Major contractors shortlisted for the design and construct contract

2023 – ACCIONA Construction Australia awarded the project

2024 – Major construction works commenced

2026 – Expected completion and opening to traffic

Regional and National Importance

The Singleton Bypass is an important project for both regional communities and the national freight network.

The New England Highway serves as a major inland freight corridor connecting Sydney, the Hunter Region, northern NSW and Queensland. Improving travel reliability along this route will benefit freight transport, mining operations, agriculture and regional businesses.

For the Singleton community, the bypass will also significantly improve safety and reduce congestion in the town centre by removing heavy through-traffic.

Looking Ahead

With construction well underway and completion expected in 2026, the Singleton Bypass will become a major upgrade to the New England Highway corridor.

Once complete, the bypass will remove around 15,000 vehicles a day from Singleton’s CBD, bypass five sets of traffic lights, cut congestion, reduce freight delays and deliver safer, faster and more reliable journeys for the 26,000 motorists who travel on this section of the New England Highway each day.

Over the past 12 months, more than 1300 workers have been active across the entire alignment, with major achievements including:

  • All six bridges under construction, including the region-shaping 1.6km Hunter Floodplain bridge now 80% complete
  • More than 500,000m³ of earthworks placed (the equivalent of 200 Olympic swimming pools)
  • Council’s new water pump station nearing completion
  • Peak work underway on drainage, utilities relocation, pavement, noise walls, and safety screens

The project will deliver faster travel times, improved safety and greater freight efficiency, while also improving liveability for residents in Singleton.
