BMD is one of Australia’s largest privately-owned construction companies, offering engineering design, construction, and land development services for clients and partners. 

Who is BMD and how did BMD start?

BMD offers engineering design, construction, and land development services for clients and partners in the urban development, transport infrastructure, resources, and energy sectors. The company delivers projects ranging in size from $1 million to over $1 billion. 

BMD started as a family business in 1979. The company was named after the company’s founders. The B in BMD stands for founder and Group Board Chairman and Managing Director, Mick Power’s sister Beverley and her husband Bevan who were both partners in the business for the first 12 months. The M stands for Mick Power, and the D for his wife Denise. ¹

Over 2022-23, BMD has also worked with over 6000 Australian suppliers and subcontractors, making a record revenue of $2.03 billion. As of today, there are approximately 2000 staff across 17 offices. Across the workforce, 19% of BMD’s staff are women, and more than $1 million have been invested into communities through partnerships and community programs.

BMD Constructions operates across all major industry sectors with capabilities including airport, defence, oil and gas, port and marine, rail, mining and resources, roads and highways, tunnelling, water solutions, and energy infrastructure.² They offer end-to-end solutions from design and construction to maintenance, catering to both public and private sectors.

Focused on urban development, BMD Urban handles residential, industrial, and commercial land development projects. This includes federal, state, and local government infrastructure and trunk infrastructure associated with private development and commercial building projects. They provide integrated services covering the entire development lifecycle.

Empower Engineers & Project Managers (Empower) delivers engineering advice, program/project management and detailed design services for residential, commercial and industrial development projects and for roads, water, and sewer infrastructure projects. ²

JMac specialises in all aspects of landscape construction, including residential, commercial, industrial, public infrastructure, environmental rehabilitation and long-term care and maintenance. ²

Urbex 

Urbex was established in 2003 and undertakes residential and commercial development projects in sole ownership, joint venture and consortium partnerships throughout Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Darwin, Townsville and Mackay. ²

What are some projects that BMD has delivered?

Inland Rail (Parkes to Narromine section) 

A partnership between BMD Constructions and Fulton Hogan, trading as InLink, was selected as the contractor to construct the Parkes to Narromine section of the Inland Rail Project between Melbourne and Brisbane. The JV was granted $300 million for the first section of the 1,700km rail line. 

The Parkes to Narromine section provides a direct rail link between south-east Queensland, Adelaide and Perth via the Parkes northwest connection. The project was commissioned in September 2020 and is now operational. 

Bruce Highway Upgrade (Deception Bay Road Interchange) 

BMD was awarded the construction contract for the $163.3 million Deception Bay Road Interchange as part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade in Queensland. Two new parallel bridges over the Bruce Highway were provided, and two signalised intersections on Deception Bay Road were upgraded. 

Construction began in November 2020 and completed in April 2023. 

Fitzroy River Bridge 

Comprised of Main Roads WA construction companies BMD, Georgiou, and designer BG&E completed the Fitzroy River Bridge project in Western Australia six months ahead of schedule. 

The reconstruction of the new bridge connected the East and West Kimberley following the historic Kimberley floods in January 2023.

  • New Parallel Runway Project – Civil Works Package – Brisbane, QLD – $50 million
  • Bringelly Road Upgrade Stage 1 – Bringelly, New South Wales – $118.5 million
  • Fortescue River Bridge Replacement – Pilbara, WA – $9 million
  • Pacific Highway Upgrade (Woolgoolga to Ballina Section 3 – NSW – $58 million 
  • Yan Yean Road Upgrade between Diamond Creek Road and Kurrak Road in Melbourne’s North
  • Princes Highway West Upgrade – South West Victoria 
  • Port Capacity Project – Roads and Services Package – Melbourne, VIC – $90 million 

What are some current projects BMD is involved in?

Rockhampton Ring Road 

The first phase of the Rockhampton Ring Road project was awarded to the Bielby-BMD Joint Venture and Acciona-Fulton Hogan Joint Venture. It falls under the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program (BHUP), and construction began in late 2023. The initial phase includes $280 million in upgrades across location-based packages in the north and south of the project footprint.

Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline 

BMD is in a joint venture with McConnell Dowell to construct Queensland’s $714 million Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline project. It aims to mitigate the risk associated with relying solely on Awoonga Dam and ensure long-term water security for Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) customers. The capacity to transport 30 gigalitres annually will significantly enhance the water supply from the Fitzroy River to Gladstone. 

The project is BMD’s largest water contract and is expected to finish in 2026.

  • Mickleham Road Upgrade – North Melbourne, Victoria – $22 million
  • Tonkin Gap Project and Associated Works – Perth, Western Australia – $400 million 
  • West Camden Water Recycling Plant (Stage 3) – Sydney, NSW – $146 million
  • Darwin Ship Lift Facility – Darwin, Northern Territory  – Molonglo River bridge – Canberra, ACT – $172 million

BMD’s transition to the UK 

In January 2023, BMD Group entered the UK market and acquired a local infrastructure consultancy, TUSP. 16 Australian staff relocated to support BMD’s dynamic environment in the UK. 

BMD’s UK operations are set to increase as it combines local forces and global expertise to grow the transport, energy, defence, and infrastructure sectors.

The water and wastewater sector is emerging as a key market, and BMD plans to apply their Australian expertise to strengthen its capabilities and diversify its portfolio in this area.
