Young people from Brazil will be able to work, study and holiday in Australia under a new memorandum of understanding for a reciprocal Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa arrangement signed today.
Commencing on 1 July 2022, the arrangement will allow up to 500 young Brazilians aged between 18 and 30 to stay in Australia each year, for a 12-month holiday during which they can undertake short-term work and study.
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Alex Hawke said the visa arrangement is an important step in strengthening the positive relationship between Australia and Brazil, with Brazilians forming the largest migrant group in Australia from Latin America.
Australia has seen rapid growth in migration from Brazil in the past 20 years, with an estimated 46,450 Brazilian-born residents in 2018 – an increase of over 800 per cent since 2001.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil was also the largest source of international students in Australia outside of Asia and fifth largest globally.
“The new arrangement will support the rapidly growing science, research, education, economic and institutional links between Australia and Brazil,” Mr Hawke said.
Signing of the Work and Holiday Maker MOU builds on the recent ratification of the Australia-Brazil Science, Research and Technology Agreement. Since 2018 there have been over 9,000 joint research publications between Brazil and Australia.
“Boosting our Work and Holiday program will also provide considerable support to key industries and regional communities as part of focused efforts in our economic recovery,” he said.
“Working holiday makers generally stay longer, spend more money in Australia and travel further into regional areas than most other international visitors,” he said.
“Prior to the pandemic, working holiday makers injected around $3 billion into the economy each year, most of which was spent in regional areas,” Minister Hawke said.
There are now 47 countries globally with access to Australia’s Work and Holiday program.
