Top Infrastructure Projects Australia for 2017

Both the public and the private sectors have experienced massive growth with various transport, energy and cultural projects. Following is a summary of the most important construction projects:

WestConnex (NSW)

WestConnex is a 33-kilometre predominately underground motorway currently under construction in Sydney, New South Wales, which link western and south-western Sydney with the city, Kingsford Smith Airport and Port Botany precincts. In 2015 construction costs for WestConnex were estimated at A$16.8 billion, but current forecast stands at more than $20 billion. The project will create 10,000 jobs and has an expected completion date of 2023.

NorthConnex (NSW)

NorthConnex is a nine-kilometre tunnel that will link the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills, removing around 5,000 trucks off Pennant Hills Road each day. NorthConnex will be the longest road tunnel project in Australia.

Sydney Metro Northwest (NSW)

Sydney Metro Northwest is an under-construction rapid transit link to the north-western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Australia. The Northwest Metro is being managed by Transport for New South Wales and is proposed to connect Rouse Hill to Chatswood via Castle Hill and Epping.

Brisbane Airport (QLD)

Brisbane Airport’s new runway is on track to open in 2020 with the award of the Airfield Works contract to Skyway, a joint venture (JV) between BMD Construction Pty Ltd and CPB Contractors Pty Limited, a member of the CIMIC Group. The project is expected to exceed the $1 billion mark.

M1 Pacific Motorway – Gateway Merge (QLD)

The contract for the significant M1 and M3 upgrade between Eight Mile Plains and Rochedale South has been announced, with early works on the congestion busting project already underway. The contract for the design and construction of major works at the Gateway Merge had been awarded to Lendlease Engineering Pty Ltd, following a competitive tender process. The project will improve safety and ease congestion for the motorists travelling on the Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Queen’s Wharf (QLD)

Expected to open in 2022, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane will transform the CBD and river’s edge with an iconic design that embraces Brisbane’s inviting subtropical climate and celebrates the precinct’s Indigenous and European heritage with interpretive trails and experiences spanning the Brisbane River and ridgeline. This project aims to connect the Botanic Gardens, South Bank, Queen’s Street Mall and Brisbane River. The Queen’s Wharf will include five big hotels, a riverfront moonlight cinema, hostels, three residential towers and a new department store.

Perth Stadium (WA)

Perth Stadium is owned by the Western Australian State Government, construction began in December 2013 and remains on schedule to open on Sunday 21 January 2018. Perth Stadium and the surrounding Park is located east of the Perth Central Business District, on the Burswood Peninsula.

With views of the picturesque Swan River and Perth city in the west and the foothills in the east, this 60,000 seat, world-class, multi-purpose Stadium will host a variety of sports and entertainment events including Australian Football League, International and Big Bash League cricket, soccer, rugby league and union plus concerts.

Sunshine Coast University Hospital (QLD)

The hospital has been delivered as Queensland’s first Public Private Partnership, developed by Exemplar Health, a consortium comprising Lendlease, Siemens, First State Super and Capella Capital, with partners Spotless Facilities Services. Australia’s first new hospital in 20 years will deliver world-class care and facilities, as well as injecti more than $562 million a year into the local economy.

Bruce Highway Upgrade (QLD)

The project involves upgrading the Bruce Highway to 6-lanes between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. This includes major upgrades to both interchanges and the delivery of a 2-way service road for local traffic on the western side of the highway between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive. Until the end of 2017, the contractor, Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture, will focus on constructing in areas adjacent to existing roads.

M80 Ring Road Update (VIC)

VicRoads are upgrading the M80 Ring Road from Princess Freeway, Laverton North to Greensborough Highway, Greensborough as part of a $2.25 billion project. This upgrade will ease congestion by providing more lanes, reduce travel times, improve traffic flow and improve safety with better road layout. While three sections of the upgrade have been completed, planning is underway for the remaining sections, with works set to start mid-year.

Melbourne Metro Rail (VIC)

The Melbourne Metro Rail Project is a metropolitan rail infrastructure project currently under construction in Melbourne, Victoria. It includes the construction of a twin rail tunnel between South Kensington station (north west of the Melbourne City Centre) and South Yarra (in the south east) with five new underground stations.

This $10.9 billion project is one of the largest public transport projects ever undertaken in Australia, and the first major investment in Melbourne’s CBD rail capacity since the City Loop 30 years ago.
