Building Surveyor Job Description

Building Surveyors ensure buildings are constructed safely, are energy efficient, and meet all the legal requirements. They also have an extensive understanding of the building control process and consult, advise, and enforce legislative requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, approve, and review building works on new and existing buildings
  • Review, analyse and assess plans for compliance to standards, conduct inspections and issue legislative permits, and certification and approvals of buildings
  • Provide advice on building regulations, planning permission, and other requirements to clients and stakeholders
  • Review and approve building plans and designs
  • Manage and coordinate the approval process for building permits and licenses
  • Be competent in local councils, State and Territory legislation, policies, codes, and ministerial directions, and keep alongside technical changes in the industry
  • Conduct audit for accessibility, pre-purchase inspections of buildings, document and report on altered plans
  • Conduct onsite inspections to ensure that construction meets compliance and can be safely occupied

Requirements

  • Qualification in building surveying, construction or any other relevant qualifications
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and contractors
  • Attention to detail and quick problem-solving skills
  • Detailed understanding of the statutory requirements and regulations of the state currently working in
  • Must have a building certifiers license by working state, so building development, inspections of approved building work, issues and final inspection certificates of classifications can be assessed.

Average Salary

  • $110k – $130k per year in Australia
  • $80k – $110k per year in New Zealand
